Kindergarten 1 loved the teachers' Happy video so much that they wanted to make their own. Here it is in dedication to all of our teachers this year, and especially Ms. Alden and Ms. Jan who will be leaving ISS this year. We hope you enjoy it! :)

After our visit to the Big Eyes, Big Minds Singapore International Children's Film Festival, we because very interested in films! We talked a lot about our experiences back at school and had some questions:
First, we created plans for our films by drawing our ideas in small groups. Then we created scenes for our films with different objects in the classroom. When these were ready it was time to get the iPads. We took photographs on the app 'Smoovie' which turned them into stop motion animation films! When we replayed our films though we noticed that something was missing...sound! So we composed our own music in the app 'Garage Band' to match the feelings we wanted our films to have. When the films and sounds were all done, Ms. Alison helped us put it all together on her laptop using iMovie. We chose our own backgrounds, colours and fonts to complete the title and credits screens. When we watched our films, we were so excited about them that we said we wanted to have our own film festival. So Ms. Alison asked us a question: What do we need for a film festival? We independently collected all of our ideas in drawings. One of the things we said that we needed for a film festival were invitations. So we wrote invitations for all of the people we wanted to invite: Finally it was time for the film festival! The first show was for our mums and dads. We also did shows for K1KB, our Grade 3SS buddies, and Ms. Alden and Ms. Jan. Here are our films! We hope you like them! A little gift from the teachers to the students in celebration of the end of the school year to answer one of K1's most important questions...What do all the teachers do after we go home? ;) When Lucy left her old school in the UK they promised they'd keep in touch. This week she used the app 'ThingLink' to share some photos, videos, and voice recordings about her new classroom and friends. We everyone back in the UK enjoys learning about Lucy's new life in Singapore! This week when we went to check Twitter during our Afternoon Meeting, our new friend Johnny asked a question: What is Twitter?
Since the beginning of the year we have been using Twitter in our class to publish our work and share ideas with friends and family members around the world. Johnny could barely finish his question before hands were shooting up and students were enthusiastically sharing their answers to his question. What a great opportunity to reflect on why we use Twitter by explaining it to a new friend. Here are our thoughts on Twitter use in Kindergarten 1:
As part of book week our class worked on writing a story in collaboration with K1KB. We used the app 'My Story' on the iPads to draw pictures and record our voices to tell a wonderfully imaginative story. Through this experience we learned that interesting stories have action (or things that happen and change) and that the illustrations need to match the words (either text or voice) so that the book makes sense.
We hope you like our story! Click on the image below to read it. You can also download the book as an Epub file if you use iBooks at home. Before this past week Ms. Alison was away for a long time because she was sick. That didn't mean we didn't get to communicate though! The mailbox became a great way for us to keep in touch! What a great way to practice writing as a form of communication! Here are some examples of the letters and drawings that were sent back and forth: Did you know that ISS has a sister school in China called BISS? They are located in Beijing. Recently one of their Kindergarten classes invited us to participate in a fun project they were working on as part of their unit of inquiry in Mandarin. They took photos of Flat Stanleys in places around their school and asked us some questions: What can you see in the picture? Where is this place? What can we do there? Who is the person in the picture? What is his or her job? First we wanted to say hello to our friends using our Mandarin knowledge. Click 'Play Fotobabble' to hear us: Next we viewed our friends' photos in a slideshow and recorded our voices over them using an app 'Shadow Puppet'. We hope our answers will help our friends with their inquiry about schools. We certainly had fun viewing their photos and thinking about another ISS school in China! What a beautiful surprise we had this morning when we opened the mailbox...LETTERS FROM OUR FAMILIES! As the mail was handed out, the excitement increased. The children decided that they wanted to hear all of the letters read out loud, so we did. How excited we were to hear our mummy's, daddy's, grandma's, and grandpa's words and how wonderful to think that they would take the time and care to write us a letter! After we finished reading the letters, we talked about what we could do next. Everyone's ideas connected to saying thank you and a couple of people suggested that we should write some letters in return. So it was off to the writing centre for us to collect some materials and make decisions about exactly what would be important to write and draw for our families. Here are some photos of us reading our letters and holding the letters we received and the letters we wrote. We hope you like them! |
